Virtual Production (VP) and generative AI (GenAI) are rapidly changing the film industry. Film production has shifted from postproduction to non-linear production model and the demand for new digital skills is growing vigorously. Cutting-Edge Virtual Production at the Edges of The European Union (CUTTING EDGES) aims to elevate the VET and HEI film educators’ skillset on virtual film and media production with digital techniques, AI, artistry, and workflow for the educators to be able to disseminate their knowledge and skills to students of film and media and to create a Studio Access Model to inaugurate film and media professionals to the virtual production non-linear system.

The direct beneficiaries from the project are the educators, professionals and students who participate in the project network and the action of the five work packages. More benefits are listed in the Impact section.

The Lisbon Workshop, held from 21 to 23 October at Lusófona University, unfolded like a celebration of creative technology — a place where artistry, cinematography, and real-time visual production met in one joyful experiment. Hosted in the heart of Lisbon’s academic and media hub, the event brought together filmmakers, visual effects artists, technologists, and educators to explore how virtual production is redefining the language of cinema.

Valletta, Malta - 29 September 2025

A two-day workshop entitled “VP for All”, integrated within the CUTTING EDGES initiative, was recently conducted at Studio7, Malta. The event was organized by Manuel Ciantar from Studio7 and his team in collaboration with the University of Malta, with co-funding provided by the European Union. Its primary objective was to introduce participants to the rapidly developing field of virtual production and its diverse applications.

Virtual production, once a futuristic concept seen in films like Avatar with its real-time CGI previews, is now evolving fast, promising new ways to craft media. Virtual production is set to change how media appears on screen, merging physical and digital elements in new ways. The Cutting Edges project contributors offer ideas about where this technology is headed, from practical tools to wider uses.
