Exploring Post-Production: Lusófona teachers and researchers visit Nova Imagem
May 2025
On May 16, 2025, the technical excursion dedicated to virtual production, organized by Lusófona University, brought together professionals from the sector on the subject of ICVFX (In-Camera Visual Effects), comparing the technical processes involved in capturing images using Green Screen and LED Wall. The case study of the film “A Travessia”, directed by Fernando Vendrell, stood out during the presentation.
The LED Wall's significant advantages were emphasised, mainly due to its more efficient integration into the digital compositing process and the more natural interaction with the actors, facilitating immersion and interpretation.
On the other hand, the challenges inherent in using LED panels were also discussed, particularly matching the size of the LED Wall to the specific shots desired, which requires more careful planning in pre-production.
Throughout the tour, practical cases presented by companies such as Nova Imagem, Fx Roads, Q-VFXs, and Grupo Nova Imagem illustrated this technology's creative and technical potential. The active participation and discussions fostered by the examples presented by David & Goliath demonstrated the participants' strong interest in Virtual Production (VP).
The professionals involved expressed a clear awareness of the needs, challenges, and benefits inherent in LED Wall filming, demonstrating a commitment to technological innovation in the audiovisual industry.
In addition, the application of generative Artificial Intelligence in the creation of archive photographs was briefly explored, emphasising the technology's potential to significantly improve the visual quality of diegetic content.
The event lasted a productive and intense three hours, making clear the growing relevance of emerging technologies in today's audiovisual production landscape.
