Cutting Edges IADT Workshop – Camera Movement (3D Tracking)

January 2025

13–15 January 2025

Academic staff from across the Cutting Edges consortium gathered at Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design, and Technology (IADT) for an intensive deep dive into real-time 3D pipelines and virtual production.

Building on the previous 2D backplates session, this workshop moved firmly into the 3D domain, exploring the full VP stack, from acquisition through to rendering, lighting, compositing, and post-production, all within Unreal Engine.

Participants experimented with environment creation, lighting control, AI-assisted asset generation, virtual extras, motion capture, and photogrammetry, gaining hands-on experience with cutting-edge workflows shaping the future of screen production.

This two-day workshop was developed collaboratively by IADT, Ballyfermot College of Further Education, City of Dublin FET College, and a huge shout-out to industry partner Noho, whose expertise and support were central to the success of the programme.

We were also delighted to welcome industry partners Chaos and Volinga, who contributed across both days.

With attendees from University of Malta, Universidade Lusófona, Turku UAS, Polish National Film School in Łódź (PWSFTViT), Studioseven, Chaos Software, and the FilmEU Association, the workshop was a truly international exchange of knowledge and practice.

A special thanks as well to our associated partners Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) for joining us and sharing their insights.

An inspiring few days of collaboration, experimentation, and future-facing virtual production.
